Top 52 Best Restaurants In Austin, TX: Elevate Your Palate 2023

Finding the best restaurant in Austin, TX, is pretty easy after you check this post. With over 50 dining establishments here, you should get ready on the culinary trip and fulfill your stomach (and soul) with many goodies.

Austin is the capital of the Lonestar state – Texas. And it is also a Southern attraction. Besides their beautiful sightseeing, you can explore the city’s beauty through the restaurants here.

While many are long-standing establishments with fancy atmospheres, some are known for their very casual vibe, such as food trucks. But regardless of the restaurant style, these suggested locations will indeed become your go-to once you step inside and savor their food.

So grab your note, check out these 52 dining options, and list down some names to explore on your next trip to this city!

1. Odd Duck

Odd Duck used to be one of the most famous food trucks in Austin. In 2014, Chef Bryce Gilmore upgraded it into a brick-and-mortar establishment, which is situated in the South Congress area.

At Odd Duck, you can order various innovative delicacies with cheese, pork, or vegetable dishes made from quality local ingredients. That means their menu is changed frequently to benefit from the freshest components.

The ambiance is simple with vintage decor and a chill atmosphere. If you want to watch how your food is made, sit in the bar area for a better view. Keep in mind that they are usually packed during lunchtime, so make sure you have reservations in advance.

In order to book tables for a large party, you can access their website and fill out the request form. They will get back to you via email.

2. Bar Chi Sushi

Japanese cuisine is something that everyone needs to try once in their lives. And Bar Chi Sushi is a great deal to enjoy Japanese delights.

To me, it is my go-to for late-night snacking with takoyaki, seaweed salad, or spicy edamame. For a full meal, they have a wide selection of sushi rolls, bento dinners, or other hot dishes.

They have a long list of wine, sake, beer, and cocktails. And if you are interested in the iconic Japanese drink – sake, the bartenders are extremely helpful in giving you an overview of it, such as what kinds of rice they use to make sake.

Make sure to take advantage of their Happy Hour. You can enjoy food at lower prices from 4 PM to 7 PM (from Monday to Saturday) or all-day Sunday Happy Hour.

3. Justine’s

Let’s stop by Justine’s to get loose after a long working day or for late-night dining (as they open until 2 AM)!

It is a cozy restaurant remodeled from an old house. The atmosphere is fun yet intimate with funky lighting fixtures, red walls, and a roomy courtyard filled with tents and chandeliers, featuring an authentic vibe of a French brasserie.

The menu is pretty short with traditional French foods. But it doesn’t matter because their dishes are insanely delicious. My recommendations are steak frites, Ratatouille, and Poisson Béarnaise. They come out in big portions so you can share them with your friends.

If you look for a more delightful experience at Justine’s, sit at their bar area and have some chats with the bartenders. Walk-ins are welcome here, but you can still reserve a table in advance (limited capacity).

4. Suerte

Suerte is a fantastic Mexican restaurant in Texas, particularly in East Austin. And all customers’ praise for Suerte is well-earned. Behind their success is the dedication of Chef Fermin Nunez – a native Mexican who would love to deliver flavorful and authentic delicacies to the community.

The quality of ingredients is impeccable because they are sourced from Central Texas farmers. The attention to detail is superb. Come to Suerte in the summer, and try their Masa to feel the perfect balance of earthy and sweet.

Of course, tacos are staples here. They might look straightforward, but every bite is magical with tons of flavors and textures. My favorites are Suadero and brisket tacos. You should try them too!

Another plus of Suerte is their ambiance inside. The dining room is bright and airy. With wooden furniture, decorative items, and Mexican-theme plants (like cacti), every accent creates a trendy and cute vibe. On the other hand, the exterior has been an iconic scenery on Instagram.

Suerte offers brunch on the weekend. Though you can book a table for indoor or outdoor dining, they have limited spots for reservation. Furthermore, they don’t allow pets in any restaurant’s areas, even the outdoors.

5. Uchiko

Uchi is a big brand name in the restaurant industry in various cities. It is one of the nicest spots to dine in Dallas, Texas as well. In Austin, you can still enjoy the same quality of Uchi’s delicacies at Uchiko. Why?

Uchiko is a child of Uchi, which stems from the same Japanese concept of James Beard award-winning Chef Tyson Cole. As such, this is an upscale restaurant with top-notch sushi, omakase, and cool tastings, similar to its parent Uchi.

The menu at Uchiko is extensive with almost 100 items. You can either choose their five-course or ten-course tasting menu if desired.

However, as mentioned above, this is a high-end restaurant, so the prices are not too budget-friendly. But you can come here during their Happy Hour (from 4 PM to 6:30 PM daily) for lower-priced dishes.

Besides the finest foods, what I also find here is a warm and intimate atmosphere with many aesthetic artworks. At first glance, you will feel the refined simplicity through their designs, materials, and lighting.

Reservation is a must at Uchiko. They still accept walk-ins, but with a limited number. For a private dining experience, you can check their website and submit the form to request.

6. Corner Restaurant

Another worth-coming destination for dining in Austin is Corner Restaurant. Located in the heart of downtown, this spot is where you can taste the authentic flavors of Texas.

Their foods are taken on traditional Southern cuisine with some modern twists. You should try the skillet cornbread, fish tacos, or Wagyu short ribs. The service is speedy and attentive to make sure you will have the best meals, from breakfast to dinner.

They only offer brunch on the weekends until 2 PM. Or, if you need a place to wind down, join their late-night bar from 10 PM (Sunday to Thursday) or from 11 PM (Friday and Saturday). The good news is the price at their bar is pretty reasonable.

Regarding the dining atmosphere, you can choose either indoor seating or on the patio. I prefer seating outside because it is a perfect seat for people watching on the corner of the sidewalk. Moreover, you can also host a big event or party here as they can accommodate up to 100 guests.

7. Wu Chow

Chinese cuisine is famous for their diverse regional culinary practices. Coming to Wu Chow, you can enjoy these cuisines in the most authentic way, including Sichuan (mostly), Beijing, Cantonese, or Shanghai-style dishes.

Actually, there are some modern twists added to the original recipes because the restaurant highlights the use of local ingredients. However, they still feature the closest touch to classic Chinese delicacies.

If you want to experience dim sum – Chinese small plates of dumplings and other dishes, join their brunch on Sunday (from 11 AM to 3 PM) for a hearty meal! Or, if you have yet to try crispy Beijing roasted duck, come here for dinner on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

They are open for dine-in inside, on the patio, and delivery. In terms of the interior design, it is very trendy and fancy.

With the warm wood tones and bright-colored furniture and details, everything shows up as the perfect blend of Western and Chinese cultures.

8. Buenos Aires Café

Opened in 2009, Buenos Aires Café is a good place to enjoy Argentine food, a type of cuisine that is not too popular in Austin.

This place offers a little culinary journey to Argentina through their family-rooted recipes. Plus, they emphasize using the freshest and organic meats to create authentic flavors in every bite.

Their wine list is extensive. If you don’t know which wine to choose, start with Argentina’s nation-acclaimed wine – Malbec. On the other hand, their Argentina-inspired cocktails are worth-trying, too!

Regarding the space, it is a cute and cozy place to dine in. If you want private dining for 10 to 70 guests, you can request it on their website. They have different menus for these dinings, including Prix-Fixe or A la carte.

9. The Capital Grille

Located downtown between Congress Avenue and Colorado street, The Capital Grille is a familiar steakhouse in this neighborhood. In fact, this is a national chain you can find in other cities and states, including Illinois, Florida, New York, etc.

It is an upscale steakhouse owned by Darden Restaurants – a leader in full-service restaurant operators. At The Capital Grille, you can savor the renowned dry-aged steaks that in-house butchers and chefs carefully prepare.

Remember to try their seafood dishes, such as lobster bisque or lobster and crab cake. They are amazing! If you are still trying to decide what to get here, ask the server. They are so friendly and attentive to giving you some recommendations.

Overall, this is a great spot for date nights, celebrations, or even business meetings (up to 30 guests). So make sure you have reservations to avoid a long wait.

10. Salty Sow

In case you need an eatery for group dinner, I bet you will love Salty Sow. This is a gastropub where you can devour farmhouse fare made from pork, beef, chicken, and more.

The eatery’s menu is relatively small, but it would be much better for those who don’t know which one to start with. From my experience, I recommend chicken liver mousse for the entree, and candied pork belly or honey rosemary dipped fried chicken for the main course.

Here is another quick tip at Salty Sow! Come here on their Happy Hour for reduced prices, such as $5 tacos or $7 biscuits. Their hand-crafted cocktails are super cool as well. And they are $2 off on the Happy Hour.

11. Emmer & Rye

Located at the bottom of the SkyHouse apartment complex, Emmer & Rye is a contemporary restaurant serving New American-style delights. And if you are a conservationist, you would love this place because it is a carbon-neutral restaurant.

Regarding their fares, they focus on using seasonal ingredients, resulting in a daily-rotating menu, which means you will not get the same dishes on the next visit.

Everything is in the freshest form, including meats, vegetables, and heirloom grains for house-made pasta, bread, etc. For the dining experience, you can either choose an a la carte or a prix fixe menu. Both of them are wonderful in different ways.

The dining area is very attractive with a bright room, French farm chairs, vases with long grain stalks, and an open kitchen so you can watch how the chef and his team prepare your meals. There is also a spacious patio in front of the restaurant if you prefer people-watching.

12. Olamaie

Olamaie (pronounced ola-MAY) is another place to immerse in Southern food and feel the warmth of Southern hospitality. Nestled at the corner of San Antonio and 17th Street, Olamaie is a remodeled establishment from the 1930s bungalow.

The first thing that may draw your attention is their lovely patio, white wood paneling, and luxe contemporary decor.

Their food is to die for as they are loaded with flavors and perfectly cooked. You should start with their buttery biscuits; then you will understand why they are a must-try item at Olamaie. And they could be the tastiest biscuits that you have ever eaten.

However, the food prices are relatively high. But it doesn’t matter anymore after you try their delights. Frankly speaking, this place has everything you could ask for from modern Southern cuisine.

13. Uchi

What are the differences between Uchi and Uchiko? The answer is not much, except for the fact that Uchi is a parent of Uchiko.

Opened in 2003, Uchi’s menu takes on traditional Japanese dishes with a bit of Austin fare influences. Some highlights here are Hama chili, sake tom kha, and various amazing sushi dishes.

Similar to Japanese cuisine, which is simple yet outstanding, the restaurant design is minimalist and elegant. Walking into the restaurant, you can enjoy food in a pleasing environment with dimming lights, cozy booths, woven ceiling pendants, and bright red floral wallpaper.

Great food, top-notch service, and free valet parking, such a perfect dining place, right? Reservation is recommended, but the staff is also willing to make a last-minute accommodation for you.

18. Red Ash

Red Ash does a good job of bringing authentically Southern and Northern Italian food to the area. Run by Executive Chef/Owner John Carver, this destination is where you can devour handmade pasta, locally-sourced meat, and fresh seafood.

The key characteristic to make Red Ash distinctive from others is their custom-built wood-burning grill, plancha, and oven. Wood fries release red ash, hence the name of this restaurant.

Their 50-day dry-aged steak served with buttery garlic sauce is out of this world. Plus, pairing your steaks with a glass of red wine is a must. They have abundant wine selections, which are sourced from the finest winemakers in Italy, France, Spain, Chile, and more.

However, the only drawback at Red Ash is the reservation is not too easy to get. It might take 1 to 2 months to get, but trust me, it is worth your waiting.

La Barbecue is a BBQ restaurant of LeAnn, whose dad was a James Beard award-winning Chef Bobby Mueller. In order to honor her dad, she and her wife – Alison Clem, decided to open their own restaurant in 2012 to offer the best BBQ delights to the community.

According to LeAnn, she doesn’t like the sweet note in food. That’s why the seasonings are savory and salty. In fact, they heavily use pepper in both meat-based dishes and sides.

La Barbecue’s brisket is succulent and moist and can melt in your mouth. The secret behind their magical brisket is the way they cook it. It takes from 14 to 16 hours to cook it over the Texas post oak.

However, they do not take reservations, so if you want a good spot to taste their brisket, come here early. Bring your dogs too! They have a dog-friendly patio.

The food, of course, is insanely yummy and served in generous serving sizes. The inside is quite dark, which is perfect for dating. The restaurant also provides private event services. Just fill out the form on their website, and they will contact you as soon as possible.

Everything is made from scratch and served in creative ways. What’s better, the fare is at very reasonable prices. They are even cheaper on Happy Hour, from 5 PM to 6:30 PM on Tuesday to Saturday.

24. Patrizi’s

Patrizi’s has always been my best-loved Italian restaurant in town. It was opened in the 1940s by the Patrizi family. Currently, the restaurant is headed by Matt and Nic Patrizi, and they believe this eatery is a way to pay homage to their Italian culture.

First, you need to know that this place is not a fancy restaurant, but this unique concept will attract you once you arrive at this eatery.

They have 2 locations. The first one is on Manor Road, which is a food truck in a Vortex theater’s garden. The second branch is a new one located on Cuernavaca. However, it is a mortar-and-brick eatery with a big patio.

No matter where you choose to visit, your tummy will thank you for the goodies you put into it. House-made pasta, garlic bread, and other classic Italian fares, all of them are beyond your expectation.

These wood-fired pizzas are baked to perfection. They are light, airy, and tasty. And they taste much better with marinara or margherita sauce. The accompanying veggies are fresh and fantastic as well.

Regarding Bufalina Due’s drink menu, this place can be seen as a wine-focused eatery with numerous options. You can sign up for the Bufalina Wine Club with a better-priced wine pack to elevate your meal with pizzas.

Let’s stop by Moonshine Grill for hearty Southern-style delights! You can find it on Downtown or Avery Ranch; both feature consistency in quality to ensure your best meals.

In fact, the Downtown location is more popular as it is located in one of Austin’s oldest commercial buildings – Waterloo Compound. With almost 20 years in the restaurant industry, Moonshine Grill is proud of their in-house dishes to define the beauty of Austin.

It is not a fancy eatery, which means that dining here will not cost an arm and a leg. Their delights are comforting and take on classics, such as chicken and waffles, steaks, pork chop, or apple pie.

The portion is large, making it a great place for group or family gatherings. For private dining, their Sunday House is perfect for a group of up to 25 diners. Or book for their festive patio to host larger parties.

You can choose their cozy inside seating or savor food on the wraparound patio. No matter where you sit, you still feel the Italian charm and personality from the atmosphere.

From my perspective, I prefer to come here at night. With dim-lighting fixtures, candles, and jazz music, your dinner will be memorable and immaculate.

32. Mattie’s

Mattie’s is a restaurant at Green Pastures – Austin’s most historic farmhouse. In 1916, Martha “Mattie” Faulk and Henry Faulk (her husband) moved to this house and started their culinary journey in South Austin.

Mary (Mattie’s daughter) was the one who remodeled and began to serve exotic Southern food to the neighborhood in 1946. Until now, Mattie’s is still a top-choice restaurant that both locals and tourists would love to come to.

What impressed me most on my first visit was their refined interior design. It makes me feel nostalgic about the Southern charm. The dining rooms are varied in colors and details. There is a main lounge with a long leather sofa where you can sit and sip wine.

What’s better, you will love to sit outside to get a better view of the peacocks walking around the property. This place is also perfect for hosting events, even weddings.

Regarding Mattie’s menu, most of them stick to their Southern roots, such as burgers, fried chicken, French toast, etc. You can come here to grab dinner or brunch (on weekends). Remember that they don’t work on Monday and Tuesday.

33. Dai Due

Dai Due is another Austin’s hidden gem waiting for you to explore. At first glance, the restaurant might look like a boutique grocery shop. Actually, this is a restaurant-splash-butcher shop, so it is, apparently, not an ideal place for vegan or vegetarian diets.

Once you step inside it, the stylish and welcoming ambiance will attract you immediately. Leather booths, rustic furniture, or fancy-looking lighting, everything shows you the warmth of Texas hospitality.

You can even smell the meat cooking over the open flame in the kitchen. In terms of Dai Due’s menu, it is hard to find another place serving authentic Texan cuisine like here. So make sure to try their meat-based dishes like fried chicken, pork chop, pastrami sandwiches, and more.

They only use the region’s ingredients, such as Texas olive oil or Texas-grown grains. Many items are also certified organic, increasing the quality of Dai Due’s meals.

How about their food? Kemuri Tatsu-Ya provides small-plated food with the vibe of an izakaya. In Japan, an izakaya is an informal bar serving alcoholic beverages and snacks. So don’t be so surprised that many dishes come out in small portions.

In case your favorite dish is sandwiches, Bird Bird Biscuit is the best pick. It has been acclaimed as the 5th spot on the top 100 USA restaurants on Yelp in 2022, so their quality is unquestionable.

So what makes them so special? First, their chicken sandwich wrapped in buttermilk biscuits is an icon here. Or their Quen Beak (sandwich with spiced chicken breast, bacon-infused chipotle mayo), and Bird Bird Bacon (include bacon, eggs, and bacon-infused chipotle mayo) are phenomenal.

For more convenience, they mainly take orders online so you can place them ahead of time and pick your food up later at the front of the shop. Don’t call to place orders.

Stella San Jac is a relatively-new establishment in the city. Sit at the bottom of the Westin Austin Downtown hotel; this restaurant does not offer stereotypical hotel food. Instead, it is where you can indulge in tasteful food with infused cocktails, wines, or local beers.

In terms of their menu, they feature Southern-inspired dishes with a few mixes from other culinary cultures in the city. I strongly suggest you try their biscuits, beef short ribs, prime strip steak, and deviled eggs.

Valentina’s Tex Mex is an ideal food truck for BBQ connoisseurs. Owned by Miguel Vidal, this place shows the love for food of The Vidal family. They emphasize the connection between family members and friends, making it become a perfect place for get-togethers.

At here, you will be thrilled with Tex-Mex delicacies, slow-smoked BBQ meat, sandwiches, tacos, and a variety of sides. The meat can literally melt in your mouth, and they are packed with flavor. My suggestions are brisket taco, breakfast taco, and queso.

Though the food is served from the food truck, there is a building where you can dine in, or you can enjoy your meal on outdoor seating. The parking is not too challenging as you can park on the street nearby.

51. Franklin Barbecue

You should expect a long waiting line in front of the restaurant. And there is a reason for it. Owned by Aaron Franklin – a meat-smoking manifesto and a James Beard award-winning chef, the restaurant is undoubtedly one of the most well-loved BBQ eateries in Austin.

His culinary journey started in 2009 with a barbecue food trailer, then upgraded to a brick-and-mortar spot in 2011. His restaurant is acclaimed for making the best brisket in Texas, but there are more amazing dishes you need to try.

Actually, they are just classic BBQ dishes like pulled pork, pork ribs, sausage, and turkey. But the intense flavor and melt-in-your-mouth texture are no joke. With so much attention to detail and a huge love for making food, no wonder why it is also packed.

Unfortunately, Franklin Barbecue does not take reservations so you might need to wait around 2 to 3 hours or even 5 hours on the weekends. So being patient is a key to dining here. Or you can place your order online in advance and grab it on the premises later so you can skip the waiting line.

52. Veracruz All Natural

Another very busy food truck in the city is Veracruz All Natural, so once you come to this place, expect a short (maybe long) wait. Started in 2010 on East Cesar Chavez with one food truck, and now it has 5 locations in Austin.

What you can find here are authentic Mexican delights, particularly tacos that are made from organic and fresh components. And according to the Food Network, their Migas taco is one of the 5 best tacos in the USA.

There are also vegetarian tacos for you to choose from. Apart from tacos, their steak, grilled chicken, or quesadilla deserves a try too.

For the drinks, this place specializes in smoothies, fresh juices, and the star Agua Frescas. These beverages are super refreshing with no sugar added.

If you don’t want to wait, you can order online, then head to their location to pick up your food. However, I love their casual ambiance with a colorful trailer and picnic tables with umbrellas.
